Athens, You & Your Cell Phone

Posted July 29th, 2011 in Greece by Dan

Ahh…Athens, Greece. Welcome! You finally made it! Just enjoy the beautiful scenery and cut yourself off from the rest of the world. This is why we travel, to relax and get a break from the chaos of everyday life. No annoyances, no worries–except this is 2011 and everyone is connected to a cell phone. Yes, even in Athens. Stuff happens and you need a cell phone for Greece.

Did you bring your own cell phone for Athens? If you are a seasoned traveler, you probably already know the drill. You can use your cell phone, but you’ll probably be paying for International Roaming. The cost varies among providers, but AT&T and Verizon, for example, charge $1.99 per minute when calling from Greece. However, both companies offer a reduced rate when subscribing to a special plan. Even the reduced rates are pretty high and at 50 cents an outgoing text, it can really add up. Some people are willing to pay the extra costs to keep the same phone number and avoid having to temporarily transfer all of their contacts to another phone. If you are one of these people and cost is not a consideration, then you can at least save yourself a headache and keep your usual phone.

Mobal Phones

For someone who travels a lot to different countries, it might be a better idea to purchase an international cell phone. Mobal offers one for $29 that works in Greece. The catch is that you cannot use it when you get back to the United States unless you get the more expensive version. But, if you travel a lot, it works in almost 200 different countries. There is no contract for it, and you only pay for what you use. One of their more expensive phones even allows you to use the 3G network. Another option is purchasing a SIM card to put into your normal phone. You will probably need to contact your usual provider and ask them to unlock your phone before being able to use it.

Did you know you can even rent an Athens cell phone while you are there? This is a good choice if you are someone who doesn’t travel often. You can pick one up at most airports and when you’re done, simply drop it in the mail. These can also be a little pricey–around $80 for the phone rental and the talk time–but, you get a Greek-local phone number and the added convenience of obtaining a phone quickly in case you forgot your own.

The Parthenon, nine years in the making

Enough already about boring cell phones, let’s talk Athens. What did you come to see? You can’t visit Greece without going to see the Parthenon, obviously. This temple, created for Athena, the famed Greek goddess, began construction in 447 BC and took about nine years to build. Pretty impressive, huh? You know who would really appreciate it? Your sister. Why don’t you have someone take a picture of you on the steps and send it to her from your Athens cell phone? She will be thrilled. Enjoy your vacation in Athens!
